How many times can you use a disposable lab coat?

We’ve all become familiar with the disposable lab coat. Their iconic blue-plastic style (often paired with a matching medical cap) is easy to spot on the ward. For medical students and healthcare workers they are a staple piece of PPE that are as much a part of clinic life as the white lab coat. Here’s everything you need to know about disposable lab coats!
Disposable lab coats and disposable lab gowns are designed to be used once and then discarded, to prevent the spread of contaminants and other dangerous pathogens. Reusing a disposable lab coat could compromise its barrier protection and increase the risk of contamination.
Whilst it may be tempting to use them again (even if they appear to be clean), these items of PPE are specifically designed to be used once only. If your disposable lab coat becomes contaminated or damaged while wearing it, you should also replace it immediately.
What are disposable lab coats made from?
Disposable lab coats are usually made from non-woven polypropylene, which is a lightweight and breathable material that offers protection from dust, liquids, and other particles. Lab coats and gowns made from this type of material are strong, yet flexible and breathable, and provide excellent protection against contaminants. Polypropylene is also a low-cost material that is easy to manufacture and is widely available, making it an economical choice for medical clinics.
At Lab Coat Company, our disposable lab gowns are made from 46gsm PP/PE non-woven material and have been approved by the Therapeutic Goods Association. They are a great solution for low-risk situations and are splash resistant with elastic cuffs to protect sleeves.
Can you wash a disposable lab coat?
The ability to wash a lab coat comes down to the material it is made from and there is a big difference between a fabric lab coat and a disposable lab coat. Fabric lab coats are washable and should be bleached to ensure that all contagions are killed. However disposable lab coats are designed to be worn once and then discarded, so they are not suitable for washing.
Choosing the right lab coat
In a laboratory setting, it is important to wear appropriate protective clothing like a disposable lab gown to reduce the risk of exposure to dangerous materials. To ensure adequate protection, it is recommended that you use a new disposable lab gown each time you enter the laboratory or any workplace that requires lab coat protection.
